Commercial Photography Award for Storm Photography
May 22nd 2014
Tony Bramley ABIPP of Storm Photography was very pleased last night to be announced overall winner for two categories in the annual awards for the London & Essex Professional Photography Group, co-sponsored by the British Institute of Professional Photographers. Images are below this release.
Key award for us was in the Press, PR, Events & Sport section as the outright winner. World renowned judge, Martin Grahame-Dunn commented immediately ‘there are times when a print just oozes quality’. At that point I knew we were in with a chance. The award was in particular a credit to the composition, moment of capture and quality of printing.
All commercial printing is produced in-house at Storm Photography, up to A1 size. Critical display images always spend a certain amount of time in post production to ensure that we have produced the highest quality possible before the image goes to print. After this the image is profiled for the specific printer and type of paper used to ensure that the final result matches the post production work.
The second winning image, for the Landscape category, was complimented on for it’s tonal range and detail, the ability to capture at source and produce in print, a full range of tones from the blackest black to the whites without loss of detail. Also complimented was the level of detail and structure within the landscape and the balance of tones in the reflections compared to the scene.
Both images required skilful work in post production to achieve a hand printed depth to the images and extracting the best possible quality of the digital file to the final output onto paper. Much of the work involved traditional darkroom skills but translated into modern digital processes on the computer using layers, masks and manipulating the light through burning-in or dodging selected areas, to produce a high range of the tones and give depth to the finished print.
Our clients recognise that there is still a need for high quality output, whether it is print or a digital file and that it takes skilled post production work to produce the best in an image. Sending images off online or to the high street is fine if all you need is a record or proof shot. However, when the image is important and of high value to the customer, paying for the right photographer, with the right skills, helps to enhance the customers own vision of their product or service.
We are extremely happy with the results from last night as we have had a period of expansion in the last two years for commercial work, encompassing PR, corporate head shots, product shots and architectural work. This is the first time we have entered into more commercial awards catagories and shows that we can transfer from previous awards in wedding & portraiture to the developing side of our commercial business.
We are currently working on a five year plan to increase commercial photography work closer to a 50% split with our other wedding and portraiture work. After winning previously in the wedding category for the regional awards, winning in a different discipline helps us to enforce the quality of our work for any new commercial clients looking for high quality images to enhance their own portfolios.
Tony also offers training in post production for all levels in digital imaging.
